Reviews:

James: Quite liked it, got confused for about the first 20 to 30 mins, but once you get over that its really quite fun.
Liked the black comedy (am I still allowed to say that in the age of political correctness etc?) eliment to the film
some of the characters were hillarious (nazi punks, diva hit women), whilst others were quite under used.
But overall a good laugh and kept me hooked to the end!

3.5 stars out of 5 (am I allowed a half point, didnt think it was a four starer, but three felt like not enough?) star ratingstar ratingstar rating

Jamie: Okay. star ratingstar rating

Mike: It was the second time of watching and still difficult to follow however you soon get into the swing of it.  Entertaining characters especially the "ninja kid" and his mum, and plenty of action and people getting shot to bits.  Great twist at the end.  Would probably leave it a while before watching again and also stay sober during it else I wouldn't stand a chance. One for blokes methinks. star ratingstar ratingstar rating

Katy: Blokey Film?? Not necessarily! I really enjoyed it and am pleased with myself for following the plot (and explaining to it to hubby later! )

I would have given it 4 stars but it did have a little too much shooting in it really. So therefore 3.5 from me too. star ratingstar ratingstar rating

Sandra: ????? ????? ?? ???? ??? ?????? ??? ? ?????? ?? ? ????? ???? ?? ? ????? ?? ????
???? ?? ? ????? ?? ?? ????? ??? ? ??????? ?? ? ????? ? ???? ???? ???? ??? ? ??
????? ?? ????? ?? ?????? ??? ???? ?? ????? ?? ???? ???? ???? ? ??? ?? ???? ?? ?

???? ?? ? ????? ?? ?? ????? ??? ? ??????? ?? ? ????? ? ???? ???? ???? ??? ? ??
????? ?? ????? ?? ?????? ??? ???? ?? ????? ?? ???? ???? ???? ? ??? ?? ???? ?? ?

No stars cos I fell asleep

Angela: An overally complicated plot, completely lost what was going on, typical boy film. star rating

Overall: Definitely a boy film or people with plenty of male genes, will probably end up being a cult film. star ratingstar ratingstar rating

05/02/2008 - Review of Spiderman 3 by Julia and Mike (but not Martin cos he was playing football)

Director:Sam Raimi

Writers (WGA):Sam Raimi (screenplay) & Ivan Raimi (screenplay) ...

Release Date:4 May 2007 (UK)

Genre:Action / Adventure / Sci-Fi / Thriller

Tagline:Next summer, the greatest battle lies... within.

Plot Outline:A strange black entity from another world bonds with Peter Parker and causes inner turmoil as he contends with new villains, temptations, and revenge.

Awards:Nominated for BAFTA Film Award. Another 14 nominations

Julia thinks: Rubbish crying at the end from Mary Jane, rather unbelieveable plot regarding the rematerialisation of the Sandman (I think Julia thinks Spiderman is real hehe) and the black sticky stuff left questions unanswered - where the fook did it cum from?  Love interest moments of the film were rather oversentimental and in reality she should have been shagging Spidey's best mate and also can you really see MJ and Spidey at it?  Can you see Spidey at it full stop?  Where is is Spidey's nob?  Does he lay eggs?  Of the 3 Spiderman films I think this one was the best - let's face I've not been a fan. I give this film 3 stars: star ratingstar ratingstar rating

Mike thinks: What film was Julia watching?  Nothing short of awesome.  I certainly felt the heat and heart in those love scenes and the special effects were proper good.  Little does Julia know but I was downloading some great soft porn during the film but didn't really get loads cos I kept on getting distracted by the block busting action. In all honesty, Julia's right - 3 stars! star ratingstar ratingstar rating

Summary: Good fun action, neither of us could imagine Toby Maguire in a sex scene and the Sandman had wind.  3 stars star ratingstar ratingstar rating

Elijah Wood - (Kevin)
Marley Shelton - (The Customer)
Frank Miller - (Priest)
Tommy Flanagan - (Brian)
Rick Gomez - (Shlubb)

Mike thinks: Black and white, and sometimes red and also yellow.  Very strange film featuring lots of violence, torture, birds in suspenders and cigarette smoking.  I bet Marlboro made loads of dosh from this film.  Anyway - despite being rather violent, dark and weird this film was pretty damn good.  Being a bit of a fan of arty farty films this one fits that category - arty. I give this film four stars: star ratingstar ratingstar ratingstar rating

Angela thinks: Crap. star rating

Summary: Angela was a bit put off by all the excessive violence and torture and didn't really understand the plot.  Mike enjoyed it thoroughly but thinks it would have been nice if some of the birds got their baps out.  3 stars star ratingstar ratingstar rating

Transformers DVD

30/01/2008 - Review of Transformers by Mike, Angela, Julia and Martin

Director: Michael Bay

Writers (WGA): Roberto Orci (screenplay) & Alex Kurtzman (screenplay)

Genre: Action / Adventure / Fantasy / Sci-Fi / Thriller

Tagline: Their war. Our world.

Plot Outline:A war re-erupts on Earth between two robotic clans, the heroic Autobots and the evil Decepticons, leaving the fate of mankind hanging in the balance.

Awards:Nominated for 3 Oscars. Another 5 wins & 21 nominations

Mike thinks: Fantastic entertainment, visual effects were mind blowing and the comedy elements were well timed. My only critiscism is that it was a shame that Starscream wasn't involved that much cos in the cartoon he was a right nob. I give this film five stars: star ratingstar ratingstar ratingstar ratingstar rating

Angela thinks: The film was surprisingly entertaining and even featured a love interest.  Wasn't to keen on all the pissing around in the lads garden, trying to keep the robots hidden from his parents and the end fight scene went on so long I managed to get all the washing up done whilst waiting for it to finish.  Overall, thought it wouldbe shit but managed to almost enjoy it. star ratingstar ratingstar rating

Julia thinks: This was such a surprise.  I wasn't expecting much sure but it was funny, some innuendos, some comic moments especially with bumble bee...good action scenes, good v's evil good wins feel good family fun...but is it ok to fancy a car/robot from outer space? I give this film five stars: star ratingstar ratingstar ratingstar ratingstar rating

Martin thinks: it was good, very good special effects, also quite a good story line. just sort of enjoyable star ratingstar ratingstar ratingstar rating

Summary: Mike loved it and was bored or waiting for Martin and Julia's comments but they've done it now so that's great.  Mike said, "I'd been sitting here for nearly 21 days and still no reviews.  I nearly to give up soon and go home for tea but finally they arrived by first class post." 5 stars star ratingstar ratingstar ratingstar rating

Angela thinks: I liked the Narration throughout the film, however I didn't understand what was going on most of the time. It was hilarious for the first 20 minutes. 3 stars. star ratingstar ratingstar rating

Mike thinks: Really good, much better than expected. Couldn't predict what was going to happen at all. Had elements of Pulp Fiction in it but with more incidental comedy. Interaction between Harry Connick Jnr and Val Kilmer was outstanding. I give this film five stars: star ratingstar ratingstar ratingstar ratingstar rating

  • Sahara (2005 starring Matthew McConaughey and Penelope Cruz)
Sahara starring Matthew McConaughey and Penelope CruzDescription: Dirk (Matthew McConaughey) and Al (Steve Zahn) have been friends since kindergarten, having also gone through college and the Navy together. The two now work for a former admiral travelling around the world and salvaging treasures from the sea with the National Underwater and Marine Agency (NUMA). In his spare time, Dirk is obsessed with the 150-year-old mystery of the Texas, an Ironclad battleship that reportedly disappeared from Richmond, Virginia during a Civil War battle and turned up in Africa. When a Confederate coin--allegedly one of only five minted--surfaces in Mali, Dirk and Al plan to travel there from Lagos, Nigeria on the admiral's yacht to investigate. Meanwhile, in Lagos, Dirk meets Eva (Penelope Cruz), a doctor for the World Health Organization (WHO) who believes that there is a plague building in Mali. Since the WHO is unable to find another way into the war-torn country, Dirk and Al give Eva and her colleague a lift up the river. Once in Mali, Dirk, Al, and Eva quickly find themselves embroiled in trouble as she pursues the source of the disease. Meanwhile, Dirk and Al search for the Texas. Based on a novel by Clive Cussler, SAHARA is a rollicking thrill ride through exotic locales, including everything from high-speed boat chases to helicopter pursuits to jeeps racing through the desert to camel rides. A warlord and a greedy French businessman prove to be formidable villains for the trio. McConaughey fits the bill as gentleman and adventurer Dirk, while Zahn holds his own as likeable sidekick Al. Cruz is feisty as independent Eva. Director Breck Eisner's theatrical feature film debut also features William H. Macy as the admiral.

    Reviews:

James: A superb film in the vain of Indiana Jones and 007 with a touch of xXx for good measure. Thoroughly entertaining from start to finish. The film also demonstrates that it does not shy away from the greater political issues facing the African continent such as pollution, poverty and corruption. I would be very surprised if we do not see Sahara's name being pulled out of the gold envelop on Oscar (TM) night, surely best film, best actor and best director is guaranteed! star ratingstar ratingstar ratingstar ratingstar rating

Jonnoooo: Think the A-team with better stunts and an expensive set. Obsessed treasure hunter searches for armoured 1800's US boat (with full on cannons!) off the coast of Africa. Enter hot brunette who is trying to save the world from a deadly disease. Add lots of explosions, baddies with cr@p aims, toxic waste, tanks, boats and helicopters and you get the drift! Watch this at your peril - you crazy fool! star ratingstar rating

    Jamie: Crap. star rating

Mike: Was bored shitless. Dunno what film James was watching cos it was certainly not this one. They should have tried a different approach to the Indiana Jones one, it definitely didn't work here. The film is inconsistent, for example, "Dirk" (such a cheesey porno name) is an ex-Navy Seal and at the start of the film kicks ass in hand-to-hand combat like a ninja. How come he fights like a girl in the rest of the film?? star rating

Overall rating: star ratingstar rating (borrow it maybe but don't buy it)
  • Constantine (2005 starring Keanu Reeves)
Constantine starring Keanu ReevesDescription: Having been born with the gift of being able to see the spirits that roam the Earth, John Constantine finds himself stuck between the boundaries of Heaven and Hell. Seeking salvation, he teams up with a sceptical LAPD cop who is investigating the suspicious death of her sister, and together they delve below the surface of Los Angeles and uncover the world of angels and demons that lie beneath...

  • Reviews:

James: A brave attempt at making this ultra smooth and dark comic book into a film. Unfortunately however it was utter rubbish! Lost in its own self indulgent script, the key players themselves seam to be confused as to what is supposed to be happening. Constantine could and should have been so much better, however like The Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions before it I was left feeling like I had been short changed and had just lost two hours of my life where I would rather have watched paint dry! (no stars)

Jonnoooo: Heaven and Hell (complete with Angels and Demons) fight it out in this sublime feast of weirdness and full on dark action. Keanu Reeves - looking like he's just stepped out of the matrix - is a chain smoking devil bashing heaven chasing mean mother-fusser. He spends his life beating back evil trying to buy his way into heaven. Enter hot brunette trying to find out why her sister died. Add lots of fighting, cool monsters and a twisted arc-angel and you are in for a great time. Watch this film (even if you don't understand it at the end). star ratingstar ratingstar ratingstar rating

Jamie: Utter shite. (no stars) - thanks for you extensive comments Jamie ;o)

Mike: Slightly confusing film but interesting nonetheless. Was slightly spoilt by the heckling from Jamie, however I got my own back by calling him a cant! Good storyline, there's definitely a gap in the market for a film about Angels, Devils and Demons - this nearly filled it! star ratingstar ratingstar rating

Overall rating: star ratingstar rating (might be better watching it the second time)
